How to Set Up Your Google Business Profile (Step by Step)

Published August 25, 2026 · 5 min read

Google Business Profile is completely free, and it's the single highest-impact thing most small businesses skip. Without it, you don't show up on Google Maps or in local search — even if someone searches your exact business name.

Step 1: Claim your listing

Go to google.com/business and search your business name. If a listing already exists (Google sometimes creates one automatically), claim it. If not, create a new one.

Step 2: Choose the right category

Pick the category that most specifically matches what you do. This affects which searches you show up for, so avoid vague categories when a specific one exists.

Step 3: Complete every section

Business hours, phone number, website link, service area, and a written description using the actual words your customers search — not internal company language.

Step 4: Add real photos

Listings with photos get significantly more engagement than those without. Real photos of your team or work, not stock images.

Step 5: Verify

Google will confirm your listing is genuine, usually by phone, video, or postcard depending on your business type and location.

Step 6: Keep it active

Respond to reviews, post updates occasionally, and keep your information current. An abandoned profile signals to Google (and customers) that a business might not be active.
